The last place we camped before going to Cooktown and civilisation was
also the worst. No grass, just dirt and ashes. The aboriginals are great
believers in burning off, and even though this was a National Park, there
was little grass, just anthills. This Photo was taken in the Laidley National
Park, a few kilometres from Charlotte Bay. we are standing in front of
an anthill. there must have been 10 million of these in the Park. There
were a lot of really big ones in this area, infact we put the toilet behind
one! This one was more like an apartment house, with a different breed
of ants making there home in the top part of the hill. During the wet
season the water covers the bottom of the hill, and all the anthills have
a "high water mark" on them. To our right is the communal shower,
though by this stage we were too tired to care anymore. The clothes were
clean, but hand washing is no substitute for a washing machine and hot
water! Ray's beard is in full flight, but he lost it (and about 10 years)
when he looked in the mirror at Townsville and saw how much he looked
like his dad!! The enlarged shot also shows the evening sky, which is
beautiful. There was a full moon that night, and it was huge, bigger then
I have ever seen it down south.
